Feeding preferences

NEW - Feeding records still urgently required.  If you have Carnaby's feeding in your garden, please fill in the form below to let us know!

Carnaby's cockatoos are known to feed on a large variety of plants including Proteaceous species (e.g. banksia, dryandra and grevillea), marri nuts, and a range of introduced species - notably pine cones. However, most current information is based on studies in WA's wheatbelt, and records of food preferences on the Swan Coastal Plain are not available.

If you see Carnaby's cockatoos feeding on either native or non-native plants on the Swan Coastal Plain, we are interested to know what the plants are. Download the form below and record anytime you see the birds feeding.

Habitat surveys

The project will also identify critical feeding habitat for Carnaby’s cockatoos.  Vegetation surveys will be conducted to enable estimation of food resources on the Swan Coastal Plain. If you are interested in undertaking counts of Banksia flowers and/or transects through pine plantations please join the volunteer team by contacting Bansi.

NEW - In the meantime, if you see Carnaby's in large flocks in large parks and reserves in your area, we need your help to determine what the birds are eating.  This will help us identify potentially important habitat for the birds, and assist in determining food resources available on the Swan Coastal Plain.  Please download the form below and contact Bansi.
